Must-Have Tools for Every Toolbox
No matter what the project, these must-have tools will make the job a little easier. Whether you're a seasoned do-it-yourselfer, or just beginning to learn what it's all about, having the right tools on hand is as important as researching a project before you start. You'll find yourself reaching for these essential tools for basic repair jobs, simple home improvement projects, and even more advanced tasks.
Toolbox basics - Everyone, regardless of age, gender, or skill level, should have a very basic toolbox in their home. Ladies, this means you too! Keep your toolbox stocked with the essential tools we've listed below and kept it well organized for easy access. When purchasing any of these must-have tools, remember that quality counts. Invest in durable tools that will last. They're safer to use, and will typically come backed by a warranty.
Tape measurer - A retractable metal tape measurer with locking mechanisms is one of the essential tools you can have. You'll find yourself reaching for it for all different types of home improvement projects. Look for one with a side clip that can attach to a belt or pocket.
Level - Since it's difficult to eyeball the 'level' of any one object, a tool is needed to ensure artwork, lumber, shelves, and other materials are hung evenly. A level allows you to see how centered anything you hang is, or which direction it needs to be moved to even it out. My toolbox has several levels inside of it, varying in length and width for jobs of different sizes.
Hammer - Every home needs at least one hammer. They're needed for everything from hanging pictures and mirrors, to complete room renovations. It's helpful to have a metal hammer and a non-marking rubber mallet too, which can be used to hammer-in objects without leaving a dent or mark on the surface.
Cordless drill - You'll find 101 uses for a cordless drill. They're affordable, versatile, and come with many different size drill bits for all types of home improvement projects. They also make installing or removing screws a snap.
Screwdrivers - For quick tasks, you won't want to set up the cordless drill. That's when having a screwdriver comes in handy. Purchase a flat-head and a Phillips-head screwdriver, or one with an interchangeable tip. If you plan on working up on a ladder, purchase a magnet-head screwdriver that will help hold on to small screws, so you're not climbing up and down the ladder to retrieve them.
Pliers - Shopping for pliers can be confusing because there are so many different types to choose from. Most jobs will call for needle-nose pliers, but it's also good to have a set of adjustable pliers, as well. These must-have tools are needed for loosening nuts and bolts, grasping objects, and bending heavy-duty materials.
Wire cutters/strippers - Electricians are not the only people that need wire cutters and/or wire strippers. Although they are an essential tool for the trade, they are also handy for the average do-it-yourselfer to have. Purchase a one-piece combination tool that can be used to bend or cut heavy-gauge wire, or other thick materials that are difficult to cut through, and strip and cut wire, when needed.
Adjustable wrench - Instead of filling your toolbox with different size wrenches invest in one adjustable wrench that can be used for everything. Wrenches are great for loosening nuts and bolts, grasping objects, and other basic home repairs.
Tool belt - Tool belts are awesome because they allow you to keep all your essential tools with you as you work. Instead of lugging around a toolbox with you, strap on the tool belt and fill it with your tools. There are loops, pockets, clasps, and other special areas to hold everything secure while keeping it right at your fingertips. Ladies, they even have pink tool belts!
Protective gear - Every toolbox should contain protective gear to prevent injury. Safety goggles, work gloves, and face masks will be needed for working with paint, chemicals, dust, and home improvement projects of varying degrees of difficulty. A back brace will also be needed when lifting heavy objects.
